8:45am Motor Coach from Harrah’s to Virginia City, NV and the Virginia and Truckee Railroad. Virginia City, NV developed as boomtown with the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode, the largest major silver deposit discovery in the United States, with numerous mines opening in the area. The population peaked in the mid-1870s, with an estimated 25,000 residents. The mines' output declined after 1878, and the population declined as a result. Today, Virginia City is a fine example of the towns of the old west, open as a living museum of times past.

Viginia City Banner The Virginia & Truckee Railroad is the most famous of American Short Line railroads. Construction began in 1869 and in the ensuing 74 years the busy mountain railroad hauled millions of dollars in gold and silver ore from the mines deep below Virginia City. As many as 45 trains a day departed from Virginia City for Gold Hill, Silver City, Carson City and Reno where trains such as the “Lighting Express” connected with the newly constructed transcontinental railroad. The V & T was later extended to Minden, Nevada.

The scenic railroad was rebuilt in 1974 and operates daily, summertime tours from Virginia City to historic Gold Hill; using century old, ornate, open and closed passenger cars- powered by hard working steam and heritage diesel locomotives.

We will board this train for an hour tour of the desert hills and pass by mines of yester-year on our way to Gold Hill, NV and return. We will then move by motor Coach to the Downtown area of Virginia City. Shopping, Trolley Tours, and lunch on your own, we will then meet at 1:00 pm for the Virginia City Outlaws Comedy Show.

We will depart Virginia City at 3:40 for return to Harrah’s Lake Tahoe
