Alexander MacRay

MacRae, Alexander, 83, formerly of Murrells Inlet, S.C., died of respiratory failure on Saturday, January 23, 2010, in Richmond, Va. Alex was born and raised in Darby, Pa., the son of Peter MacRae and Jean Robertson MacRae of Edinburgh, Scotland.

He began work with the U.S. Postal Service in 1941, and in 1944 joined the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific theatre, where he participated in the Battle of Okinawa. At the end of the war, he returned to work with the Postal Service, and in 1950 married Jean Elizabeth Carson, also of Darby, Pa. In 1953, he became a postal inspector, and during the course of his career, worked in Parkersburg, W.Va., Richmond, Va., Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, Pa., retiring in 1980 as a regional chief inspector.

In 1982, he and Jean moved to Murrells Inlet, S.C. As active in retirement as he had been while working, he was a member of several service and fraternal organizations. An avid boater and sport fisherman, Alex was a longtime member of the Grand Strand Saltwater Anglers Association and the United States Power Squadron. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the National Association of Retired Postal Inspectors. Alex was a 62-year member of the Richmond Lodge No. 230 F. & A.M. (Pa.), and a recent affiliate of the Glen Allen Lodge No. 131 A.F. & A.M. (Va.). Alex was a member of the Surfside Presbyterian Church in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

He is survived by his sons, Roderick and his wife, Amber, Steven and his wife, Inger, and Peter and his wife, Brenda; and his grandchildren, Caitlin, Alex, Colleen, Susie and Emily. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara, of Seattle, Wash.; and by Jean, his beloved wife of 59 years.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 5, at the Surfside Presbyterian Church at 8732 Highway 17 Bypass, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29588.
