The New York/New Jersey Chapter is hosting the Atlantic Region Reunion at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and Conference Center located on the Hudson River in the Scenic Hudson Valley, 75 miles north of New York City and 75 miles South of Albany, NY. The hotel is located at 40 Civic Center Plaza, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Hotel telephone number is 845 485-5300, and email is www.pokgrand.com. The NARPI room rate is $109.00 per night plus tax and includes daily breakfasts. Self-parking in an attached garage is free to attendees.

Sunday May 15
The Registration table and Hospitality room will open about 3 p.m. It will be located in the Roosevelt Room on the fourth floor of the hotel. This room will serve as our hospitality room and meeting room throughout the reunion.

Monday May 16
A tour bus will pick us up at the hotel and depart for West Point Military Academy, about a 45 minute ride. We will arrive in time to visit the West Point Visitor's Center and Museum before taking a guided tour of the Military Academy itself. You can visit their website at www.usma.edu. A buffet lunch will be served at the stately Hotel Thayer located on the grounds of the Military Academy. Following lunch an hour-long cruise on the Hudson River is planned, leaving from the West Point Academy dock, sailing down river under the Bear Mountain Bridge to Haverstraw, NY, and returning to the Academy, where we will board the bus for the return trip to the hotel arriving about 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday May 17
A tour bus will pick us up at the hotel and depart for Hyde Park, NY, and a guided tour of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Home and Museum. Following lunch at the Hyde Park Restaurant and Brewery, the bus will depart for a guided tour of the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, NY, returning to the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel by 4:30 p.m. Both the FDR Home and the Vanderbilt Mansion are National Historic landmarks operated and maintained by the U.S. National Park Service.

Our closing banquet will be held at the hotel with a cash bar open at 6:30 p.m. and seating will begin 7:15 p.m. Guest speakers will be announced. The banquet will end at 10 p.m.

Shirley Meyers, long time Poughkeepsie domicile secretary from the 1960’s to 1980’s will be an honorary guest at our reunion banquet. Shirley met and trained a number of Postal Inspectors and current NARPI members including including Jack Ellis, Rick Hennessey , Dan Mihalko, Joe Schrotz, Bob Burbridge, Les Dickerson and many other Inspectors who passed through NY in their careers during her tenure.

Golf Outing
A golf outing is planned on Tuesday. It will be held at the Casperkill Golf Club, 2320 South Road , Rt. 9, conveniently located approximately 4 miles from the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. This is Robert Trent Jones, Sr., designed course, par 72. Course ranges in length from 6153 yards, white tees, to 6690 yards at the blue tees.

The Reunion golf outing would consist of 18 holes of golf. We will start with registration and a continental breakfast at 9AM and play at 9:30AM. The included lunch will be served to the golfers as they finish their 9th hole and begin the 10th hole. This should allow everyone to finish by 3:00 PM.

In addition to NARPI members attending the reunion, Invitation Flyers are being distributed to all current/active Postal Inspectors and Inspection Service Personnel in the New York and Newark Divisions to join us for the golf outing. We believe this will provide an opportunity for camaraderie and increase the overall participation in the event.

Prizes will be awarded for longest drive, closest to the pin, low score, and high score.

Wednesday May 18
Arrangements have been made with the hotel to extend the NARPI room rate of $109.00 plus tax for Wednesday night for all attendees interested in staying another day to do additional sightseeing in the area or travel to New York City. A 5 minute shuttle bus ride from the hotel will take you to the Poughkeepsie Train Station for a scenic one hour and 45 minute train ride along the Hudson River to Grand Central Station in New York City. Round-trip train fare from Poughkeepsie to NYC is currently $29.00 per person. A sightseeing package is being prepared and will be available at the reunion. Wednesday is also matinee day for Broadway shows.

Walkway Over the Hudson NY State Historic Park

After 20 years of planning, in October, 2009, the world's longest elevated pedestrian bridge was opened by the New York State Park Service. Rising more than 200 feet above the Hudson River, the 1.25 mile long concrete-paved walkway offers virtually unobstructed, spectacular views of the Hudson River and Hudson Highlands. Click here to visit their website. Well over half a million people have run, walked or bicycled over the bridge since it opened a year ago. The Poughkeepsie entrance to the Walkway is less than a 10 minute walk or short car ride from the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. Bring your camera; this will be an experience to remember.

Dress
Throughout the reunion dress will be casual/ comfortable sport clothes. The banquet on Tuesday will be business attire for the men and dress/pant suits for women.

Other Area Attractions
The Culinary Institute of America (CIA), the world's premier culinary college, considered by many to provide the world's best culinary education, is also located in Hyde Park, NY. The CIA offers visitors a memorable experience via their restaurants, retail stores, and public tours. See their website at vmvv.ciachef.edu for details.

Locust Grove, the Samuel F. B. Morse Historic Home Site, a National Historic Landmark is located on the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, NY. The estate, with miles of carriage roads, landscaped grounds, historic gardens, and Hudson River views, has been preserved as a museum. The mansion's 25 rooms contain a fine collection of art and antiques.

The Eleanor Roosevelt Home, known as Val Kill Cottage, is also located in Hyde Park, NY, and is a National Historic Site operated by the U. S. Park Service. The cottage served as her retreat, her home and her office from 1924 until her death in 1962. For more details see their website at www.nps.gov.

Restaurants: Shadows On The Hudson Restaurant, located at the Shadows Marina, is considered the Hudson River's premier waterfront dining establishment. It is affiliated with the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and is accessible by a 5 minute free shuttle bus ride from the hotel. There are another 18 restaurants of various cuisines and caliber located within walking distance of the hotel.

Transportation: Stewart-Newburgh International Airport is the closest airport, about a 30 minute drive to the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. The Westchester County Airport in White Plains, NY, is about a 1 hour drive to the hotel. The Newark, NJ, International Airport and the JFK and La Guardia Airports in NYC are about 2 hours away. The hotel is also accessible via Amtrak and Metro North trains from NYC, about 1 hour and 40 minute ride. Those driving cars can take the New Paltz-Poughkeepsie Exit 18 of the New York Thruway to the Mid Hudson Bridge to Poughkeepsie and the hotel.
